Australia and India sign landmark organic trade agreement

Australian organic producers can now export to India without additional certification following a landmark organic trade agreement.

The Australian Government has signed a Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) on organics equivalence with India’s Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).

Under the MRA, Australia and India recognise each other’s organic certification systems as equivalent for a defined scope of products.

Australian producers have improved access for certified organic unprocessed plant products (excluding seaweed, aquatic plants, and greenhouse crops), processed foods composed of one or more ingredients of plant origin, and organic wine.

These products can be marketed in India as organic, via certification to Australia’s National Standard for Organic and Biodynamic Produce.

Key benefits include Australian organic producers gaining enhances access to India’s rapidly growing organic market.

Moreover, ties between the Australian and Indian economies will be further strengthened.
